People rarely have much time to look at an outdoor advert.
A driver passing a large roadside screen may have only a few seconds to understand the message. Someone travelling in a taxi or walking through a busy area is surrounded by buildings, traffic, signs and other visual distractions.
This makes simplicity one of the most important principles in billboard advertising.
The strongest outdoor creative often has a clear focus. One message. One dominant visual. Branding that is easy to identify.
When every element has a purpose, audiences can understand the advert quickly and remember what they have seen.
Outdoor Advertising Has Seconds to Make an Impression
Billboards are viewed differently from online ads, print adverts, or social media posts.
This is especially relevant in the UAE. Major roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road carry large volumes of traffic. Drivers and passengers are constantly processing information around them.
An advert therefore needs to communicate quickly.
Trying to include a headline, subheading, product description, website, phone number, offer and several images can make the message difficult to absorb.
A simpler execution gives the important elements more room to stand out.
One Clear Message Is Easier to Understand
Before designing an outdoor advert, brands should decide what they want people to remember.
Is it the brand name?
A new product?
An upcoming event?
A promotional offer?
A new store opening?
Once that objective is clear, the creative can be built around it.
Keep Headlines Short
Long sentences require more attention.
Short headlines give audiences a better chance of reading the entire message during the time the advert is visible.
There is no universal word limit that works for every campaign. The important question is whether someone can understand the message naturally while passing the site.
If the copy needs explaining, it may be too complicated for the format.
Strong Visuals Can Do Much of the Work
Outdoor advertising is a highly visual medium.
A strong image can communicate an idea before someone has read a single word.
Product photography works particularly well when the item itself is recognisable. Automotive brands can place the vehicle at the centre of the creative. Food brands can use close-up imagery to create appetite appeal. Fashion and beauty campaigns can make a model or product the main focal point.
The image should support the message rather than compete with it.
Using several small images can divide attention across the advert. A single dominant visual creates a clearer place for the eye to focus.
Branding Should Be Easy to Identify
A memorable creative idea has limited value if people cannot identify the advertiser.
Branding needs to be visible without overwhelming the design.
This might mean using:
- A clearly positioned logo
- Recognisable brand colours
- Distinctive packaging
- A familiar character or brand asset
- A short and recognisable tagline
Established brands may be able to rely heavily on distinctive colours or products. Newer businesses may need their name or logo to have greater prominence.
The final creative should make it clear who is speaking.
Avoid Making the Billboard Do Everything
One common mistake is expecting a single billboard to communicate an entire marketing campaign.
Outdoor advertising can introduce an idea, build awareness, promote an offer or encourage an action. It does not need to explain every detail.
A campaign promoting a new residential development, for example, may focus on the development name, location and one key selling point. Interested audiences can then visit the website or search for the project to learn more.
The same principle applies to retail, automotive, entertainment, hospitality and FMCG campaigns.
Choose the information that matters at that moment and remove anything that does not help communicate it.
